Most of my current photography follows my medical photography background, albeit in natural settings rather than hospitals, with up close and macro photography predominant. The shorter legs of this tripod are ideally suited for these purposes, allowing a tripod head to be 12 inches (30.5cm) off the ground. I have found tripods with longer legs a considerable inconvenience when shooting close to the ground in the wild. I use the tripod with only half of the combinable legs for my up close work.
I add the second half for my scenic photography, affording 59 inches (149cm) maximum height. If needed, Ries does offer J700 extension legs that will add an additional 25 inches (63.5cm) to the height of this tripod, achieving a maximum height of 84 inches (209.5cm).
This is the perfect tripod for large format cameras and any heavy camera. I have routinely used this tripod with a Linhof 5x7 Technika camera, my principle camera, which weighs 12+ pounds with my lightest lens and 13 pounds with my heaviest lens, without any problems, even with my bellows fully extended to its 23 maximum extension. Also concerning the topic of availability, any of the parts for any Ries tripod are readily available from Debby Hughes and the wonderful staff at Ries Tripod at their Bremerton, Washington location. This is an American made product after all. Please note that this is a used tripod. There are small scuffs, small indentations, and slight abrasions in the wooden portions of the tripod here and there as one might expect from normal usage. There is some slight bowing to a couple of the wooden legs.
None of these small imperfections affects the performance of the tripod in any way. There are no cracks in any of the wooden parts. The three rubber feet at one end of the inner legs are in good condition.
The pointed metal feet at the other end are as well. The connecting screws and receptacles between the separable legs are in excellent condition. All the metal hardware is intact and in excellent working condition. There are also minimal scuffs to the metal hardware as one might expect from normal use. This tripod has never seen abuse. This tripod was always placed in the included Cordura bag whenever I transported it. I have found in my over fifty years in photography that abusing equipment does not pay.I take great care with all of my photographic equipment and find doing so rewards me in the end.
